Tableau Software is a business intelligence-focused interactive data visualization software company based in the United States. It began in Mountain View, California, in 2003 and is now headquartered in Seattle, Washington. Salesforce bought the company for $15.7 billion in 2019. This was, at the time, Salesforce's (a leader in the CRM area) largest acquisition since its inception. Salesforce's acquisition of Slack later exceeded it. Christian Chabot, Pat Hanrahan, and Chris Stolte, the company's founders, were all researchers at Stanford University's Department of Computer Science. From 1999 to 2002, they concentrated in visualization approaches for examining and analyzing relational databases and data cubes, and founded the company as a commercial outlet for Stanford research. To build graph-type data visualizations, Tableau products query relational databases, online analytical processing cubes, cloud databases, and spreadsheets. An in-memory data engine can also be used to extract, store, and retrieve data. Pat Hanrahan, Christian Chabot, and Chris Stolte started Tableau in January 2003, and the company moved its offices to Seattle's Fremont district the following year. Since then, the company has extended its Fremont headquarters and announced plans for an additional campus in Kirkland, Washington, in 2016. In March 2017, a new headquarters building in Gas Works Park in Wallingford opened, followed by a new office in Fremont in 2018. Tableau announced in August 2016 that Adam Selipsky would take over as president and CEO on September 16, 2016, succeeding co-founder Christian Chabot. Tableau purchased Empirical Systems, an artificial intelligence firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in June 2018, with ambitions to integrate the company's technology into the Tableau platform. As a result of the partnership, Tableau aims to open an office in Cambridge. Tableau was acquired by Salesforce in an all-stock deal valued approximately $15 billion on June 10, 2019. Tableau announced the appointment of Mark Nelson as president and CEO in March 2021, succeeding Adam Selipsky. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Phil Carter and computer scientist and novelist Leland Wilkinson are among Tableau's notable workers. |
